Further Investigation into Racist Chants Reported by Maignan in Verona-Milan Match
The Serie A sports judge has called for a more detailed investigation into the racist chants reported by AC Milan goalkeeper Mike Maignan during the match against Hellas Verona. The judge has requested that the Federal Prosecutor’s Office provide a comprehensive report on the number of fans involved in the racial discrimination chants, the progress of identifying those responsible, and the level of cooperation from Hellas Verona in this matter.
This announcement came as part of the sports judge’s statement regarding the 17th round of the championship, specifically addressing the incident reported by Maignan during the opening match of the round at Verona’s stadium.
Other notable sanctions from the judge’s report include:
- One-match suspension for Frederic George Guilbert (Lecce) for deliberately handling the ball to prevent a goal.
- One-match suspension for Sean Sogliano (Hellas Verona director) for disrespectfully criticizing the match official in the 46th minute of the second half.
- €8,000 fine for Lecce due to their supporters throwing three firecrackers, seven smoke bombs, and four plastic bottles into the playing area during the match. The penalty was reduced under Article 29, paragraph 1b of the Sports Justice Code.
The sports judge’s decision to pursue a more thorough investigation into the racist incident highlights the ongoing efforts to combat discrimination in Italian football.
