De Roon: Atalanta’s Title Chances and Inter’s Strength
In a recent interview, Atalanta midfielder Marten De Roon shared insights on the team’s impressive season start. With Atalanta leading Serie A, advancing in the Coppa Italia, and securing a playoff spot in the Champions League, De Roon addressed the growing expectations.
“It’s becoming harder to stay humble,” De Roon admitted. “We avoid mentioning ‘scudetto’, but it’s difficult to deny our position. Soon, we’ll need to clarify our objectives.”
Regarding the title race, De Roon remains cautious: “I still see Inter as the strongest team. If needed, our coach will keep us grounded. After our Cagliari win, Gasperini merely pointed out that we need to improve to reach the top.”
De Roon noted a change in Gasperini’s demeanor: “He seems to enjoy our performances more now. If he had a thought bubble, it might read, ‘Wow, look at what we’re achieving.'”
Comparing the current squad to previous ones, De Roon said, “This team is similar to our lineup with Papu, Ilicic, Zapata, and Muriel, but we’re more defensively solid now. We’ve matured, and some players have significantly improved. We’re now winning matches we might have lost before.”
De Roon concluded by acknowledging the team’s growth: “While luck plays a part in our success, our increased maturity and player development are key factors in our current standing.”
