Conte Livid as Napoli Nearly Squander Dominant Lead Against Genoa
Antonio Conte expressed extreme dissatisfaction with Napoli’s performance in their 2-1 victory over Genoa, despite the win. The coach was particularly critical of the team’s second-half showing, where they almost relinquished a comfortable two-goal advantage.
Napoli started strongly, with Andre Frank Zambo Anguissa and Amir Rrahmani netting early goals. However, the team’s dominance waned after the break, allowing Genoa to mount a comeback attempt. Andrea Pinamonti managed to score for the hosts, while Napoli goalkeeper Alex Meret was forced into making crucial saves to preserve the lead.
In his post-match interview, Conte expressed his frustration: “Our first-half performance was excellent, but we completely lost our way in the second. This inconsistency is unacceptable if we aim to compete at the highest level. We must maintain our intensity for the full 95 minutes.”
The coach emphasized the need for his team to “defend by attacking” rather than sitting back and inviting pressure. He warned that such complacency could have easily resulted in dropped points.
Despite the victory putting Napoli temporarily at the top of the Serie A table, Conte remained unsatisfied. He stressed the importance of continuous improvement and maintaining a high standard throughout entire matches.
This win marked Conte’s 150th victory as a Serie A coach, but he was quick to refocus on the team’s areas for improvement. “If we only focus on results, we won’t progress. The players need to understand the importance of consistent performance,” Conte concluded.
