Conceicao: Milan’s First Clean Sheet and Leao’s Improved Work Rate
Following AC Milan’s 1-0 victory against Girona in the Champions League, manager Sergio Conceicao expressed satisfaction with the team’s first clean sheet under his guidance. However, he emphasized that there is still significant room for improvement.
The match at San Siro saw Milan create several opportunities, with Theo Hernandez and Yunus Musah both hitting the woodwork. The decisive moment came when Rafael Leao scored a brilliant goal after receiving a pass from Ismael Bennacer.
Conceicao acknowledged the positive result but stressed the need for continued progress: “We’ve achieved our first clean sheet, but we must become more solid and cohesive as a unit. Keeping clean sheets should become a habit, as it’s the foundation for success.”
The Portuguese coach also highlighted Rafael Leao’s improved defensive contributions: “We’ve been working on this aspect. It’s crucial for Leao to understand his dual role – as a striker with the ball and a defender without it. He’s making a conscious effort to become a more complete player.”
Despite the clean sheet, Conceicao recognized ongoing issues with defending counter-attacks: “We need to improve our collective response when we lose possession. It’s currently too easy for opponents to break through our defense.”
Milan’s next Champions League fixture is away to Dinamo Zagreb on January 29, where a win would secure a top-eight finish and direct qualification for the Round of 16.
