Chelsea Target World-Class Left-Back on Free Transfer
Chelsea are reportedly eyeing a move for Bayern Munich star Alphonso Davies when his contract expires next summer. The Canadian left-back would be available on a free transfer and represents a significant upgrade over current options like Marc Cucurella.
According to journalist Graeme Bailey, Chelsea face competition from Manchester City, Manchester United and other Premier League clubs for Davies’ signature. Bayern hope to keep the 24-year-old, but he is interested in a move to England.
Davies is widely regarded as one of the world’s best attacking full-backs. Since the start of last season, he has contributed 4 goals and 9 assists in 63 appearances across all competitions. This equates to a goal involvement every 4.84 games on average.
In contrast, Cucurella has managed 3 goals and 4 assists in 45 games for Chelsea – a goal involvement every 6.42 matches. The underlying statistics paint an even clearer picture of Davies’ superiority:
- Davies ranks in the top 1% of full-backs for successful take-ons
- Top 2% for progressive carries
- Top 3% for pass completion
- Top 6% for attempted passes
- Top 9% for shot-creating actions
While Cucurella remains a talented player, Davies would represent a clear upgrade in virtually every aspect of the left-back role. His explosive pace, dribbling ability and attacking output could transform Chelsea’s left flank.
With Davies potentially available on a free transfer, Chelsea must do everything possible to win the race for his signature next summer. Landing a world-class talent like Davies without a transfer fee would be a major coup for the Blues.
