Chelsea Should Sell £150k-per-week Goalkeeper Signed by Granovskaia
Chelsea made several high-profile signings in the summer of 2018, including goalkeeper Kepa Arrizabalaga for a record £71.6 million fee. At the time, director Marina Granovskaia expressed excitement about acquiring the young Spanish keeper, calling him a “talent we have admired for a long time.”
However, Kepa has largely failed to justify his hefty price tag during his time at Stamford Bridge. In 160 appearances for Chelsea, he has kept just 59 clean sheets while conceding 175 goals. His performances have often been criticized, with pundit Ian Wright noting he “makes too many mistakes.”
This season, Kepa is on loan at Bournemouth, with Chelsea still paying half of his £150,000 weekly wages. When comparing his stats to Chelsea’s current keepers Robert Sanchez and Djordje Petrovic, Kepa comes up short in key areas like save percentage, goals conceded per 90 minutes, and distribution.
With Sanchez and Petrovic performing better on much lower salaries, Chelsea should look to offload Kepa permanently this summer. His high wages and inconsistent performances make him an expensive liability the club can no longer afford to keep. Selling Kepa would allow Chelsea to reinvest in a new long-term goalkeeping solution if needed.
While Granovskaia had high hopes when signing Kepa in 2018, it’s clear the move has not worked out as planned. Chelsea would be wise to cut their losses and move on from the Spanish keeper as they continue rebuilding under new ownership.
