Chelsea Should Consider Selling João Félix Despite High Wages
Chelsea have made some excellent signings recently, with players like Cole Palmer and Moises Caicedo emerging as Premier League stars who could lead the club to success in coming years. However, the Blues still have work to do both on and off the pitch to challenge the likes of Liverpool, Arsenal and Manchester City at the top of English football once again.
Manager Enzo Maresca can take encouragement from his squad’s start to the Premier League campaign, as a win over Wolves would move Chelsea back into the top four. But there are still areas of the squad that need addressing, particularly in attack.
The club seems intent on signing a new left winger, with Mykhailo Mudryk’s future uncertain after a failed drug test. Chelsea have been linked with moves for Borussia Dortmund’s Jamie Bynoe-Gittens and Manchester United’s Alejandro Garnacho, suggesting Maresca is not fully satisfied with his current options.
While Palmer, Nicolas Jackson and others look set to star for Chelsea long-term, there is one attacking player who has struggled to make an impact and could be sold – João Félix. The Portuguese forward only returned to Stamford Bridge permanently last summer in a £45m deal, but has failed to establish himself in the first team.
Félix has impressed at times in the UEFA Europa Conference League, but even against weaker opposition his stats do not match up to Palmer’s in the Premier League. With AC Milan reportedly interested in signing Félix, Chelsea should seriously consider cashing in on the 24-year-old.
The Portuguese earns £130,000 per week – the same as Palmer – but has been far less influential. Palmer has 39 goals and 21 assists in 69 appearances since joining from Manchester City, establishing himself as one of Chelsea’s key players.
With Chelsea aiming to qualify for the Champions League next season, opportunities may become even more limited for fringe players like Félix. If AC Milan are genuinely interested, it could be the right time for Chelsea to cut their losses on a player who has failed to live up to his huge potential since leaving Benfica in 2019.
While squad depth is important, Félix’s high wages and lack of impact make him an expendable asset as Chelsea look to build a squad capable of challenging at the top of the Premier League once again. Selling the Portuguese forward could free up funds and space in the squad for new signings more suited to Maresca’s plans.
