Chelsea Rumored to Be Interested in Aston Villa’s Top Goalkeeper
Chelsea FC may be eyeing a move for Aston Villa’s star goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez, according to recent speculation from former player Darren Bent. Despite Martinez recently signing a new contract with Villa, Bent believes a transfer to Chelsea remains a possibility for the £150,000-per-week Argentine international.
Speaking on talkSPORT, Bent suggested that if Aston Villa fail to qualify for the Champions League again, it could potentially open the door for Martinez to seek a move elsewhere. “Chelsea could get him,” Bent stated, highlighting Martinez’s ability to play for almost any top club.
The 32-year-old shot-stopper has been instrumental in Villa’s resurgence under manager Unai Emery, helping guide the club back into European competition. Former Premier League goalkeeper Jussi Jaaskelainen praised Martinez’s commanding presence, describing him as “big, strong, fast, and great with the ball.”
However, any potential transfer would likely come at a significant cost, given Martinez’s importance to Villa and his recent contract extension. The World Cup-winning goalkeeper is considered a key leader in the Villa dressing room.
While Chelsea already have several goalkeeping options, including current number one Robert Sanchez and Kepa Arrizabalaga on loan at Bournemouth, the club’s ambitious ownership may view Martinez as an elite upgrade to solidify their last line of defense.
As the transfer rumors swirl, Aston Villa will surely be keen to retain their prized goalkeeper as they push for Champions League qualification. Meanwhile, Chelsea may have to weigh up whether another high-profile goalkeeper signing aligns with their other squad priorities.
