Cassano’s Controversial Take on Barella: “Not in My Top 11, Lacks Strong Character”
Always going against the grain, Antonio Cassano has once again stirred controversy with his comments on Inter Milan midfielder Nicolò Barella. Following Inter’s 6-0 victory over Lazio, Cassano shared his thoughts on the “Viva el Futbol” program:
“I never include him in my top 11… because I don’t see him making penetrating passes, showing exceptional quality, or demonstrating great personality by demanding the ball even when surrounded by two or three players. He’s a ‘box-to-box’ player who makes a difference in Italy because he plays alongside 17-18 other strong players, but he doesn’t excite me.”
Barella’s current season stats show 3 goals and 2 assists in 17 total appearances for 2024/25. While never known as a prolific goal-scorer, he has been a key player for both Antonio Conte and Simone Inzaghi’s Inter Milan squads.
Recently, Barella requested a substitution during the match at Olimpico due to adductor issues. While not a major concern, the midfielder may require a brief 10-day break to fully recover. He will miss the Coppa Italia match against Udinese, with his availability for upcoming games against Como and Cagliari yet to be determined.
