Cardinale: “My Goal is to Elevate AC Milan, Not Americanize It”

In a recent Harvard Business School case study on AC Milan, club owner Gerry Cardinale shared his perspectives on the future of the Italian football giant. Cardinale emphasized his commitment to enhancing AC Milan’s performance while respecting its rich heritage.

“My intention is not to Americanize AC Milan,” Cardinale stated. “Rather, I aim to introduce certain American practices that can constructively propel Milan to new heights. I’m also focusing on improving Serie A as a whole, particularly in terms of international media rights negotiations.”

Cardinale acknowledged the complexities of European football governance compared to American sports leagues. “In the US, there’s a more direct relationship between team owners and leagues. Here, we navigate multiple tiers – Serie A, the Italian Football Federation, UEFA, FIFA. This is where I face a learning curve. Back home, I could handle these matters effortlessly.”

Regarding his objectives for AC Milan, Cardinale stressed the importance of balanced success. “Winning championships is crucial, but it must be achieved intelligently,” he explained. “While fans expect us to win Serie A every year, which I understand, my responsibility to investors focuses on long-term value appreciation.”

Cardinale outlined his strategic goals: “My job is to position AC Milan to compete for the Scudetto annually, qualify for the Champions League consistently, and progress as far as possible in the competition each year. This approach maximizes cash flow and brand value. It’s the consistency and reduced volatility in performance that ultimately enhances value and ensures longevity.”
