Burnley goalkeeper James Trafford open to £15 million Newcastle transfer
According to journalist Ben Jacobs, Burnley goalkeeper James Trafford would welcome a move to Newcastle United for a fee of around £15 million. The Magpies previously negotiated with Burnley for the 22-year-old keeper last summer but were unable to complete a deal.
Newcastle have now renewed their interest in Trafford, with a potential move more likely in summer 2025 as Burnley are reluctant to sell a key player during their promotion push. Jacobs stated on NUFC Matters that “The player would love Newcastle to make another formal approach. The feeling is that Trafford might be available for £12-15m all in and Newcastle may be able to make that one work.”
While Newcastle have shown improved attacking form recently, scoring 18 goals in their last 5 matches across all competitions, manager Eddie Howe has been looking to strengthen defensively for some time. At 22, Trafford is not yet in his prime but could be viewed as a long-term replacement for 32-year-old Nick Pope.
Former Burnley manager Vincent Kompany praised Trafford as “terrific” last season. The young keeper has impressed statistically, with a 57.1% clean sheet percentage over the past year ranking him in the 98th percentile compared to other goalkeepers.
Given Trafford’s potential, affordability at around £15 million, and willingness to join Newcastle, the Magpies should continue to pursue a deal for the promising English goalkeeper as they plan for the future.
