Bayern Munich Retires Franz Beckenbauer’s Number 5 Jersey
Bayern Munich has officially announced the retirement of the number 5 jersey, worn by the legendary defender Franz Beckenbauer, as reported by the club’s press service.
“The number 5 will remain reserved for a unique legacy. Our club and its history are simply unimaginable without Franz,” stated club president Herbert Hainer.
Several notable players have worn the number 5 for Bayern Munich over the years, including Mats Hummels, Daniel Van Buyten, Robert Kovač, and Mehmet Scholl. The last player to wear this jersey was Benjamin Pavard in the 2023/24 season.
Franz Beckenbauer passed away on January 7th of this year. He played for Bayern Munich from 1963 to 1977, during which time he helped the team secure four German championships.
