Baroni Takes Full Responsibility for Lazio’s 6-0 Defeat Against Inter

Lazio coach Marco Baroni has shouldered complete responsibility for his team’s crushing 6-0 loss to Inter Milan at the Stadio Olimpico. He acknowledged that the team’s emotional collapse and loss of tactical structure were major contributing factors to the defeat.

Prior to the match, Lazio had been in excellent form, matching Inter’s 31 points in Serie A, although Inter had played one fewer game. Baroni expressed his disappointment, stating, “I am deeply saddened for the team and our supporters. I take full accountability for this loss.”

Baroni noted that while Lazio performed well for the first 40 minutes, it wasn’t sufficient. He explained, “The team crumbled emotionally, we lost our shape, and made mistakes that you simply can’t afford against a strong side like Inter.”

The coach admitted his shortcomings in managing the team’s emotional state, saying, “Evidently, I failed to handle the squad’s emotional aspects effectively, and I take complete responsibility for that. I’ve already spoken with the team, and now we must focus on improvement and getting back on track.”

Lazio’s defensive issues were exacerbated when Mario Gila left the field due to injury, replaced by Samuel Gigot. Gigot conceded a penalty leading to Inter’s first goal and was substituted at halftime. This forced Baroni to improvise, moving Adam Marusic to center-back in the absence of the already injured Alessio Romagnoli.

Baroni emphasized that such a collapse should not occur for a team of Lazio’s caliber. He acknowledged the fatigue from a packed schedule but refused to use it as an excuse. “We became too stretched out and failed to make crucial tackles. You can’t do that against a team like Inter,” he added.

This defeat marked the end of Lazio’s impressive home record, which had seen them unbeaten since March with 13 wins and four draws across all competitions.

Despite the heavy loss, Lazio’s ultras showed their support by calling the players to the Curva after the match, continuing to sing and wave flags in a display of loyalty to the team.
