Barcelona’s Camp Nou Homecoming Postponed: Laporta Revises Expectations
Barcelona’s anticipated return to Camp Nou has been pushed back further than initially expected. Despite President Joan Laporta’s earlier assurances that the team would begin the season at their home stadium, the reality is quite different. The Blaugrana may not return to their fortress until next season.
Laporta recently adjusted his messaging, stating, “We’ve always said we’ll return when circumstances allow. If unforeseen issues arise, we can’t do anything about it. It hasn’t been smooth sailing. Regarding the return, we want it to happen as soon as possible, but we must comply with UEFA regulations.” This marks a significant shift from his previous stance, which guaranteed Barcelona’s presence at Camp Nou this season.
The club recently suggested February as a potential return date, but there’s still no exact timeline. This is the third postponement of the return to the renovated stadium. The earliest possible date for fans to return to Les Corts is now February 16th, but even this seems unlikely due to significant construction delays.
The delay impacts more than just La Liga matches. Barcelona currently lacks a stadium for potential Champions League knockout stages starting in February. UEFA requires all knockout rounds to be played in the same stadium, and the Olympic Stadium in Montjuïc has other commitments. The Camp Nou renovations won’t be completed in time for the early knockout rounds.
Barcelona has until February 21st to inform UEFA about their stadium plans for the remainder of the European competition. This deadline is set just days before the Champions League Round of 16 begins.
Regardless of the Champions League situation, Barcelona’s return to Camp Nou remains uncertain, contrary to previous statements. The timeline for the team’s homecoming to Les Corts is now a mystery, leaving fans in suspense.
