Atalanta defender Ben Godfrey likely to return to Premier League after brief stint

After just six months in Italy, Ben Godfrey’s time at Atalanta appears to be coming to an end. The Serie A club is reportedly open to letting the English defender leave on loan in January, with several Premier League teams expressing interest in bringing him back to England.

Since joining Atalanta from Everton last summer, Godfrey has struggled to make an impact, playing only 67 minutes across four appearances. The 26-year-old center-back has failed to win over manager Gian Piero Gasperini and has not started a single match during his five-month stint at the Gewiss Stadium.

Despite investing €12 million in Godfrey, Atalanta seems willing to consider loan offers for the player. Gasperini has preferred other defensive options like Odilon, Isak Hien, Berat Djimsiti, and Sead Kolašinac, severely limiting Godfrey’s opportunities for playing time.

Reports suggest that at least four Premier League clubs are monitoring Godfrey’s situation, with Nottingham Forest and Wolverhampton Wanderers said to be particularly keen on securing his services when the transfer window opens in January.

Godfrey’s only Serie A appearance came as a 20-minute substitute in Atalanta’s season-opening 4-0 victory over Lecce. He also featured briefly in the European Super Cup against Real Madrid but has since played just 17 minutes in Champions League matches.

With his future at Atalanta looking uncertain, a return to the Premier League could offer Godfrey a chance to revive his career and secure more regular playing time in the second half of the season.
