Arsenal Target Creative Belgian Defender for January Transfer Window
Arsenal are reportedly pursuing Club Brugge defender Maxim De Cuyper as a potential January signing to bolster their creativity and provide additional defensive options. The 23-year-old Belgian has impressed scouts with his attacking contributions from fullback in the Belgian Pro League this season.
The Gunners have struggled to create chances from open play in recent matches, relying heavily on captain Martin Ødegaard to provide creativity. With several defenders sidelined due to injuries, manager Mikel Arteta has been forced to use makeshift backlines at times.
De Cuyper could help address both issues, as he leads the Belgian league in chances created this season despite playing as a defender. Described as an “attacking fullback with excellent crossing ability”, he can operate on either flank and provide an offensive spark from deep positions.
Arsenal reportedly sent scouts to watch De Cuyper in Club Brugge’s recent 2-0 win over Genk, where he created three chances. The club is now “doing work” on a potential January deal, though they face competition from Manchester City for his signature.
While no potential transfer fee has been mentioned, De Cuyper’s attacking instincts and versatility could make him an intriguing option to upgrade Arsenal’s fullback positions. His arrival could provide more tactical flexibility and reduce the creative burden on Ødegaard in midfield.
As Arsenal look to keep pace in the Premier League title race, adding De Cuyper’s creativity and defensive depth in January could prove a shrewd move. However, they will need to act decisively to beat out rival interest in the highly-rated Belgian prospect.
