Arsenal: Arteta Should Bench Underperforming Defender After Poor Cup Performance

Arsenal: Arteta Should Bench Underperforming Defender After Poor Cup Performance

Arsenal secured their place in the EFL Cup semi-finals with a 3-2 victory over Crystal Palace, but the performance highlighted concerns about defender Jakub Kiwior. The Polish international struggled throughout the match, making a crucial error that led to Palace’s opening goal.

Kiwior failed to make a single interception, block or tackle during the game. He also lost possession three times and won only 50% of his ground duels. This lackluster showing earned him a 5/10 rating from many observers.

In contrast, Gabriel Magalhaes has been outstanding for Arsenal this season when healthy. The Brazilian center-back leads Kiwior in several key defensive metrics:

  • Tackles: 11 vs 4 per 90 minutes
  • Blocks: 26 vs 5 per 90 minutes
  • Interceptions: 7 vs 1 per 90 minutes
  • Aerial duels won: 25 vs 5 per 90 minutes

Gabriel also poses a greater offensive threat, having scored 3 goals already this campaign. His passing accuracy (89.4% vs 84%) and progressive passing (4.27 vs 2.22 per 90) are superior as well.

With Arsenal competing on multiple fronts, manager Mikel Arteta cannot afford passengers in his lineup. Gabriel’s return to full fitness should see him reclaim his starting spot alongside William Saliba in central defense for the upcoming Premier League fixtures.

Kiwior may benefit from some time on the bench to regain his form and confidence. For now, Arsenal’s title aspirations require Arteta to field his strongest possible XI, which almost certainly includes Gabriel at the heart of defense.
