Ange should consider benching Son and starting promising Spurs youngster
Tottenham Hotspur’s struggles continued with a 1-0 loss to Nottingham Forest on Boxing Day. This marked their sixth winless match in December, with only two victories coming against Southampton and Manchester United in the Carabao Cup.
Former Manchester United player Anthony Elanga scored the lone goal for Forest. Despite dominating possession with 70% of the ball, Spurs were unable to break down Forest’s defense.
Captain Son Heung-min was one of the most disappointing performers for Tottenham. While the 32-year-old South Korean has 5 goals and 6 assists in 14 Premier League games this season, he has been inconsistent. Against Forest, Son created three chances but failed to make a significant impact overall.
Manager Ange Postecoglou now faces a tough decision ahead of Tottenham’s next match against Wolverhampton Wanderers. Given Spurs’ poor form, he may consider dropping Son from the starting lineup.
One potential replacement is 18-year-old Swedish midfielder Lucas Bergvall. The youngster impressed in his 26-minute substitute appearance against Forest, completing 92% of his passes. Bergvall has also shown promise in Europa League matches this season.
Starting Bergvall would require reshuffling the lineup, with Dejan Kulusevski likely shifting to the right wing and Brennan Johnson to the left. While risky against an in-form Wolves side, giving Bergvall a chance could help spark Tottenham and get them back to winning ways.
Ultimately, Postecoglou faces a difficult choice between sticking with his experienced captain or gambling on an exciting young talent as Spurs look to turn their season around.
