Amorim Must Replace Struggling Man United Goalkeeper Onana

When Ruben Amorim took over as Manchester United manager, he knew there would be challenges ahead. However, the extent of the team’s struggles has likely surprised even him. After just over a month in charge, United have already lost four Premier League matches under Amorim’s leadership.

While the new manager needs time to implement his ideas, much of the blame for United’s poor form falls on the players. One player in particular who has underperformed is goalkeeper Andre Onana.

Onana joined United in the summer of 2023 for £47.5 million, but has failed to live up to expectations. His recent performances have been especially concerning, with multiple errors leading directly to goals conceded. In Thursday’s 2-0 defeat to Wolves, Onana was at fault for allowing a corner kick to go directly into the net.

This latest blunder follows other high-profile mistakes by Onana in recent weeks. Against Nottingham Forest, he failed to keep out a long range effort from Morgan Gibbs-White. He also made an error playing out from the back against Viktoria Plzen in Europe.

Onana’s shot-stopping ability and distribution were meant to be key strengths, but he has struggled in both areas. His save percentage and clean sheet record are middling compared to other Premier League goalkeepers. Meanwhile, his defensive actions outside the penalty area rank in the bottom 10% of keepers.

With United languishing in 14th place in the league table, Amorim needs to make changes quickly. Reports suggest the manager is already looking to replace Onana in the January transfer window. While selling such a high-profile recent signing may seem drastic, United can no longer accept subpar performances from key players.

If Amorim hopes to turn United’s fortunes around, upgrading the goalkeeper position should be a top priority. Onana has shown he is not of the required standard for a club with United’s ambitions. A more reliable presence between the posts could help stabilize the defense and give the team a platform to build from as they look to climb up the table in 2025.
