AC Milan’s 125th Anniversary Celebration: Mixed Emotions and Notable Absences
AC Milan commemorated its 125-year history with a private gathering in Milan’s Tortona district. The celebration, however, was overshadowed by fan discontent following a disappointing draw against Genoa at San Siro. Club executives avoided confrontation by entering through a side entrance.
Notably absent from the festivities was club owner Gerry Cardinale of RedBird Capital. His decision to skip both the San Siro match and the evening party sparked criticism from supporters, who chanted “Cardinale, you must sell” outside the venue. The owner’s absence was reportedly intended to spotlight the club’s historical figures, but this move failed to resonate with fans.
Interestingly, while Cardinale was missing, Gordon Singer of Elliott Management was present. Elliott, which sold Milan to RedBird two years ago, still maintains a connection to the club, with Singer serving on the board of directors. His attendance at the 125th-anniversary event, contrasted with Cardinale’s absence, raised eyebrows among observers.
The celebration occurs against the backdrop of ongoing financial discussions. Cardinale’s nearly €700 million vendor loan from Elliott, due August 31, 2025, remains a topic of speculation. If not refinanced or renegotiated, this could theoretically result in Elliott regaining control of the club.
As Milan marks this significant milestone, the event highlights the complex dynamics between the club’s past, present, and future ownership, as well as the passionate expectations of its fanbase.
