Nice Pursues Loan Deal for Out-of-Favor Rennes Midfielder Santamaria
OGC Nice has entered into discussions with Stade Rennais regarding a potential loan transfer for midfielder Baptiste Santamaria. The 29-year-old player, who has fallen out of favor at his current club, could be moving to Nice with an option for a permanent transfer.
Santamaria was a key player for Rennes last season under former manager Julien Stéphan. He played a crucial role in the team’s Europa League campaign, helping them reach the knockout stages. Additionally, Santamaria contributed to Rennes’ impressive run to the Coupe de France semi-finals, where they were ultimately eliminated by Paris Saint-Germain.
However, the French midfielder’s situation at Rennes has changed drastically in recent months. His playing time had already begun to decrease under Stéphan compared to the previous season. The appointment of Jorge Sampaoli as the new head coach in November further reduced Santamaria’s opportunities on the pitch.
Since Sampaoli’s arrival, Santamaria has been limited to just two brief substitute appearances. He played in the final minutes of a defeat against FC Nantes and made a short cameo in a Coupe de France victory over FC Girondins de Bordeaux. In total, Santamaria has seen only four minutes of action under the new manager.
The potential move to Nice could provide Santamaria with a fresh start and more playing time. As negotiations continue between the two clubs, it remains to be seen whether a deal will be struck for the experienced midfielder.
