Almeria and Osasuna advance in Copa del Rey after victories over Sevilla and Tenerife
In Copa del Rey Round of 16 action on January 4, Almeria pulled off a stunning 4-1 upset victory at home against Sevilla. The visitors took an early lead through Isaac Romero in the 5th minute, but Almeria stormed back with four unanswered goals. Luis Suarez netted a hat-trick for the hosts, scoring in the 55th and 78th minutes before converting a penalty in stoppage time. Marco Milovanovic also scored for Almeria in the 49th minute.
With the win, Almeria advances to the quarterfinals while Sevilla is eliminated from the tournament. The result continues a disappointing season for Sevilla, who currently sit in the bottom half of the La Liga table.
In another Round of 16 matchup, Osasuna defeated Tenerife 2-1 to also book their place in the quarterfinals. Jesús Areso opened the scoring for Osasuna in the 7th minute before Jon Moncayola doubled their lead in the 25th minute. Tenerife pulled one back through Enric Gallego just before halftime, but were unable to find an equalizer in the second half.
The Copa del Rey continues with more Round of 16 matches in the coming days as teams look to advance in Spain’s premier cup competition. The tournament provides an opportunity for smaller clubs to make deep runs and potentially earn a spot in European competition for next season.
