Chelsea Could Land Their Own Aghehowa by Signing £20m “Battering Ram” Striker
Chelsea are looking to strengthen their attack in January after struggling to convert chances in recent matches. The Blues have reportedly identified Ipswich Town striker Liam Delap as a key target who could provide competition for Nicolas Jackson up front.
Delap, who joined Ipswich from Manchester City for £20 million last summer, has impressed in the Premier League this season with 6 goals in 16 appearances. At just 21 years old, the powerful forward has been described as a “battering ram” and has outperformed his expected goals tally.
Chelsea see similarities between Delap and Porto striker Samu Aghehowa, who they tried to sign last summer before a deal fell through. Aghehowa has since exploded onto the scene with 16 goals in 20 games for Porto.
Like Aghehowa, Delap was prolific at youth level, scoring 47 goals in 53 appearances for Manchester City’s U18 and U21 sides. Chelsea believe he has the potential to make a similar impact at senior level if given the chance at a top club.
While Ipswich are reluctant to sell, reports suggest Delap would be open to joining Chelsea if a fee is agreed. With Manchester City unlikely to activate their buy-back clause, Chelsea could have a clear run at signing the England U21 international.
If Chelsea can secure a deal for the £20 million-rated Delap, he could provide the clinical finishing and physical presence they have been lacking up front this season. At such a young age, he represents an exciting long-term prospect who could develop into a top Premier League striker.
