Gonçalo Ramos Battles Health Issues in Bid for PSG Starting Role
Gonçalo Ramos’ inaugural season at Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) proved challenging, but not in the way he anticipated. The Portuguese forward, who joined PSG in the summer of 2023 alongside Randal Kolo Muani and Marco Asensio, found himself competing for a single spot in Luis Enrique’s lineup. With Kylian Mbappé often playing centrally, the competition for playing time was intense.
Instead of focusing solely on outperforming his teammates, Ramos faced unexpected health hurdles. In December 2023, he battled a severe colon infection that left him debilitated for weeks. “I endured 20 days of bleeding, vomiting, and high fever, unable to eat,” Ramos revealed to Record in March. The illness resulted in significant weight loss and disrupted his adaptation to French football.
Despite these setbacks, Ramos managed to score eight goals in Ligue 1 during the latter half of the season, contributing to PSG’s league title victory. With Mbappé’s departure and Kolo Muani struggling to impress Enrique, Ramos seemed poised to claim the No.9 role. However, an ankle injury in the season opener against Le Havre required surgery, further delaying his progress.
Having returned to fitness in late November, Ramos now aims to establish himself as PSG’s primary striker. Luis Enrique’s reluctance to recruit another forward may provide Ramos with the opportunity he needs to prove his worth in the remainder of the season.
