Tottenham Target Ben Godfrey Loan Deal to Address Defensive Crisis

Tottenham Hotspur are exploring options to strengthen their defense in the January transfer window, with former Everton center-back Ben Godfrey emerging as a potential target. The North London club has made an inquiry about bringing the 25-year-old Englishman in on loan from Atalanta.

Spurs’ defensive woes have been exacerbated by injuries to key players Micky van de Ven and Cristian Romero. This has forced manager Ange Postecoglou to field makeshift defenses, resulting in the team conceding 13 goals in their last three Premier League matches.

Despite the defensive struggles, Postecoglou remains committed to his high-pressing, attacking style of play. “We won’t change our approach,” he stated firmly after the 6-1 defeat to Liverpool. “We’re doing this for a reason – because we believe it will lead to success.”

Godfrey, who joined Atalanta last summer, has struggled for playing time in Serie A. The Italian club is reportedly open to letting him leave on loan in January. His pace could be a valuable asset in Tottenham’s high defensive line, with former Everton manager Carlo Ancelotti praising Godfrey as “really fast” during his time on Merseyside.

While some fans may view this as another financially-motivated move by Tottenham, Godfrey’s Premier League experience and versatility across the backline could provide a low-cost solution to the club’s defensive crisis. As Spurs look to salvage their season and push for European qualification, reinforcing the defense appears to be a top priority for the January window.
