6 Chelsea Players Who Could Depart in January 2024
When Enzo Maresca took over Chelsea last summer, he inherited an oversized squad of 42 first-team players. The Italian manager decisively addressed this by selling several players, loaning out others, and benching some entirely.
For those still at Stamford Bridge but struggling for playing time, the January transfer window offers a chance to revitalize their careers elsewhere. Here are six Chelsea players who could realistically leave in the new year:
1. Christopher Nkunku
Linked to: Manchester United, PSG
Despite being Chelsea’s top scorer with 12 goals across all competitions, Nkunku has found himself on the sidelines in the Premier League. With Maresca clearly preferring Nicolas Jackson up front, it seems unlikely Nkunku will break into Chelsea’s starting lineup soon. Both Manchester United and PSG are reportedly interested in the French attacker.
2. Carney Chukwuemeka
Linked to: AC Milan
The 21-year-old midfielder, signed from Aston Villa for £20 million in 2022, has made just one start this season. AC Milan are reportedly considering a January move for Chukwuemeka, who has a £40 million release clause but may be available for less given his lack of playing time.
3. Ben Chilwell
Linked to: Manchester United
Injuries and Marc Cucurella’s strong form have left Chilwell out of favor at Chelsea. Manchester United are reportedly eyeing the English defender to solve their left-back issues, with Luke Shaw and Noussair Mazraoui struggling with fitness.
4. Cesare Casadei
Linked to: AC Milan, Monza
The Italian midfielder has made just four starts in all competitions and is yet to feature in the Premier League. Italy U21 manager Carmine Nunziata has advised Casadei to consider his options in January if his situation doesn’t improve.
5. Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall
Linked to: Arsenal, Manchester United, Tottenham
Despite thriving under Maresca at Leicester City last season, Dewsbury-Hall has struggled for Premier League minutes at Chelsea. Arsenal, Manchester United and Tottenham are among several clubs reportedly monitoring his situation.
6. Malo Gusto
Linked to: Liverpool
While Gusto has been Chelsea’s first-choice right-back this season, reports claim Liverpool are considering a move for the Frenchman if Trent Alexander-Arnold departs for Real Madrid. However, a transfer seems unlikely given Gusto’s importance to Chelsea.
