Arsenal’s £120k-per-week defender eyes January return to former club

As the January transfer window approaches, Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta may see some players depart as he looks to reshape his squad. One player who could be on the move is defender Kieran Tierney, who is reportedly keen on a return to his former club Celtic.

Tierney made his first appearance for Arsenal since August in their recent 3-2 Carabao Cup victory over Crystal Palace. The Scottish left-back put in an impressive 69-minute performance, reminding potential suitors of his abilities.

According to reports, Tierney is prioritizing a move back to Celtic over other options. The 27-year-old is said to be “only” interested in rejoining Brendan Rodgers’ side if he leaves Arsenal next month.

Arsenal have reportedly decided not to trigger the one-year extension clause in Tierney’s contract, meaning he could leave as a free agent in the summer if a January move does not materialize. This suggests Tierney’s time at the Emirates Stadium is coming to an end regardless of what happens in the upcoming transfer window.

A return to Celtic would see Tierney rejoin the club where he started his professional career before moving to Arsenal in 2019 for £25 million. During his time with Celtic, Tierney won four Scottish Premiership titles and was a key player for the Glasgow side.

While Tierney has shown his quality when fit, injuries and competition for places have limited his playing time at Arsenal in recent seasons. A move back to Celtic could provide the opportunity for regular first-team football as he looks to revitalize his career.

As the January window nears, it remains to be seen whether Celtic will make an official move for their former star. However, it appears Tierney has his heart set on a return to Parkhead if he is to leave Arsenal in the coming weeks.
