Filippo Galli: Insights on AC Milan’s Present and Future
Filippo Galli, a legendary former AC Milan defender and youth sector expert, recently shared his thoughts on the club’s current situation and emerging talents in an interview with Corriere dello Sport.
Addressing Milan’s difficulties, Galli expressed concern about the 8-point gap to the Champions League spots but remained optimistic about their chances. He emphasized the need for consistency and a string of victories to climb the table, warning against further missteps.
Regarding coach Stefano Pioli, Galli acknowledged the challenges in supporting him at present, noting that the dominant style of play promised in the summer has yet to materialize. He stressed the importance of players fully embracing the tactical approach on the field, pointing out that Milan often leaves themselves exposed to counter-attacks.
Galli drew parallels between himself and young defender Matteo Gabbia, praising the latter’s game-reading abilities and mental focus. He sees Gabbia as a potential long-term fixture and even a future captain for the club.
On the topic of other players, Galli mentioned Fikayo Tomori’s frustration with lack of playing time, Theo Hernandez’s prolonged dip in form, and the need to revitalize the partnership between Hernandez and Rafael Leao on the left flank.
Galli expressed particular enthusiasm for young striker Francesco Camarda, stating he’s ready for a starting role and could provide the goalscoring threat Milan currently lacks. He also noted recent improvements in Leao’s consistency, describing him as the team’s technical leader despite occasional lapses.
